Dear CCA Families,

As you are well aware, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are carefully monitoring the status of the H1N1 flu virus worldwide, and vaccine production is under way.

According to CDC, the H1N1 flu has caused greater disease burden in people younger than 25 years of age than older people. Pregnancy and other previously recognized high-risk medical conditions from seasonal influenza appear to be associated with increased risk of complications from this novel H1N1. These underlying conditions include asthma, diabetes, suppressed immune systems, heart disease, kidney disease, neurocognitive and neuromuscular disorders and pregnancy. Most people who have become ill with this new virus have recovered without requiring medical treatment.

The H1N1 virus has been shown to affect school-aged children disproportionately, and children are known to be highly likely to transmit flu viruses, especially in school and other group settings. Furthermore, scientists and public health experts are concerned that the novel H1N1 virus will persist into the fall, potentially as a more severe strain, causing more serious illness. The Department of Health and Human Services is taking the steps necessary to secure H1N1 flu vaccine for possible use this fall. (The seasonal flu vaccine is not expected to protect against the novel H1N1 flu.) CCA is prepared to deal with the varying levels of H1N1 disease possible in our community. Naturally, our first defense against any illness is prevention, and there are measures we can all take to keep our students, our families and ourselves healthy during this school year. Your commitment to that end is critical to the overall effort.

Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something – such as a surface or object – with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

This year we will provide one PUMP BOTTLE OF ALCOHOL-BASED SANITIZER PER CLASSROOM at the beginning of the year as part of our flu policy.

Listed below are the three critical tactics for our flu prevention policy.

  1. Frequent and effective hand washing and hand sanitizing
  2. Daily disinfecting of surfaces (PDS may do this already)
  3. Strict enforcement of exclusion policies for illness , if your children have flu-like symptoms, please keep them at home

Teachers and on-duty parent must visually check children each morning for signs of illness, and send children who may be unwell to their parents for a temperature check.

Thank you in advance for helping to ensure that we all stay healthy this school year!
